Mission Statement

Through the varied disciplines of theatre, Teatro Berdache exists to lend voice to the history, current realities and aspirations reflected in Calgary’s gay, lesbian and two-spirited community.

Through performance and staged readings of works drawn from the canon of gay and lesbian playwrights - and indeed, the canon of gay and lesbian-themed works by writers of many backgrounds - we believe theatre has the power to enrich the lives of its participants and its audiences. We are dedicated to performance of visionary works that confront homophobia, challenge the prejudices both outside and inside our constituency, demonstrate outstanding artistic merit, and embrace the diversity of our community.

Although we exist primarily to serve the gay and lesbian community, Teatro Berdache recognizes its role as an important link to the community at large, and as an advocate for social justice. We view the recognition of gay, lesbian and two-spirited equality as being part of the universal quest for social justice; therefore we are committed to partnerships, a code of ethical conduct, and the celebration of a universal human spirit.
